A Guide to Furnishing Your Home

This is often the most challenging part of interior design projects. Will the beautiful piece of furniture fit through the front door, stairwell, or elevator? It’s no surprise that many customers at furniture stores finish buying the showroom’s samples. Which furniture store are we talking about, by the way?

1. Do not purchase the furniture store’s showroom. Mainly applicable to bedroom sets. Don’t give in to temptation. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen a dresser and a tall boy placed next to each other without any apparent problem with the scale or weight of the arrangement in the room. Choosing furnishings is the one area where this is helpful. This decision severely constrains the future.

2. Make a plan and remember to keep it basic. To begin planning your space, grab some graph paper. Door and window frames should be included. The next question is, “How do you get around the room?” Draw the route on the floor plan with a 36′′ allowance if you can. Please keep in mind that 1 square = 1 inch. How much space do you still have? Place your furnishings here.

Do some “Sit” shopping. When working with clients, I sometimes have them sit for a while. People who fall into the “I know it when I see it” category are among my most frequent customers when it comes to furniture. Put that money worries aside because you are not making any purchases today. Have a seat. Is it easy for you to relax? After that, I consider the client’s feedback and the item’s dimensions. Too hard (tight back), soft (loose back), too many pillows, or insufficient space to sit? Too little? After sitting in several different ones and taking careful notes, I can confidently declare that this model suits your needs regarding its overall dimensions, seat depth, and height.

Plan once more. When creating your floor plan, remember that an average sofa and coffee table require a distance of 18 inches to function correctly. Can you wear it? In most cases, we will prioritize the bed, the sofa, or the lounge chair in a room. Think about what’s necessary, and then look for complementary elements.

Five, textiles. Don’t be shy about ordering matching upholstery for all of your pieces. They can be brought together in a variety of ways. Which would you pick: texture, pattern, or neutral? Choosing “special order” over “off the floor” will help your home look more organized. You will also have unique, personal furnishings rather than generic copies found everywhere else.

Accent pieces, number six. Here’s where we can let our imaginations run wild with the decor. You can display your character, travels, and ancestry in an accent piece of furniture. A standard coffee table is roughly 18 inches tall, while a standard side table is around 30 inches (this should be adjusted according to the arm heights of your chairs and sofa). Take some risks. Traditional furniture might benefit from the addition of a modern, edgy piece.

When it comes to art and accessories, a strong theme might make for a stunning presentation, but a more subtle connection can often be more effective. You’re not designing a storefront when you decorate your house, so please don’t buy all your accent pieces at once. Have some flexibility and explore what works best for you. After we’ve finished installing, it’s possible that we’ll leave the room as is. As I pass the room while installing it, I can make any necessary adjustments to the placement and watch the area take shape, like letting bread rise before baking. You’re still on the case, so please be patient.

It’s important to remember that the work involved in creating a luxurious home can be enjoyable.
